Math Activity to Teach Using Known Facts / Familiar Facts: Salute

Math Activity: Salute

Strand: Number Sense and Numeration, Addition & Multiplication
Math Strategy: using known facts; using familiar facts

Materials: 
• 1 deck of cards with 10, J, Q and K removed
• A math tool to help solve the problem (rekenrek, counters or square tiles)
• 3 players

Overview: 
In this game students work to find the “missing part” or value of the card on their head. Students take turns being the “sum finder”, adding up the value of the two cards and shouting out the sum. Each student needs to use the part they see (the value of the card on the other players forehead) and the whole to determine the value of the card on their forehead. After each turn the players rotate their roles by one so that each player has a chance to be the sum finder or to find the missing part.
How this Supports Student Learning:
Students are able to practice a variety of math strategies through this game. Students can find the missing part by counting on, making ten, using doubles or familiar facts. In this game, each player could be practising a different strategy. Having a math tool nearby will support students in solving the problem.

Where to next?
For students that are developing their ability to join numbers, removing all cards greater than 5 may be helpful. As students become comfortable finding the missing part you can increase the complexity of the game by adding higher value cards, eventually including 10 - K, and assigning a value to each card. Alternately you can refer to each card as a decimal tenths. For example if player 1 draws a 7 and player 2 draws a 4 the sum finder would call out “1 and 1 tenth”. In order for the “part finders” to win the round they must refer to their card as a tenth (I.e.7/10 or 2/10 in this case).

Math Activity to Teach Anchor of 10: Making 10 Concentration

Making 10 Concentration:


Overview:
This game is a variation of the concentration or memory game.  This variation, from the original game, helps strengthen students’ understanding of the Anchor of 10 strategy.  To begin place 16 cards face down between players. Players take turns flipping over two cards in an effort to find a match that adds to 10.  If the two cards add to 10, the player collects the cards.  If the cards don't add to 10, they are turned over again.  When a pair of cards are removed, they are replaced with two new cards from the pile.  At the end of the game, the player with the most cards wins.  The game can also be adapted for the five anchor strategy, the same rules can be used to play Make 5 Concentration, using these cards: aces, 2s, 3s, and 4s.

How this activity supports learning:
Making 10 Concentration provides students with an opportunity to practice making 10.  It is important for students to build a foundation of numbers using 10 as an anchor.  It is a valuable strategy for computing basic facts and later larger numbers.  With a solid anchor of 10 students will see that in 7 + 6 we can find a 10.  They would take a 3 from the 6 to join it to the 7 to make 10.  The remaining 3 is then joined with the 10 to make 13.
 




This strategy will later be carried over into multi-digit numbers such as 270 + 360.  Students will see that in the 70 and 60 there is 100 with 30 left over. They would then be able to combine 500 + 100 + 30.  Essentially, this is "making 10" which is an efficient way to solve computations, especially when doing mental math.

Math Strategy: Using the 5 or 10 Anchor

What is "using the five-or-ten anchor"?

Math Strategy: a strategy that involves decomposing numbers to find 5s or 10s for easier calculations

Overview: 
In this strategy, students split one or both addends to find anchors of five or ten and the left over amount.  Using the five- or ten-anchor is a foundational skill that helps students see how numbers relate to each other.  When students focus on number relationships and build an understanding of numbers, they are able to see smaller numbers inside of larger numbers.  The numbers 5 and 10 provide the strongest benchmarks for thinking about all other numbers.

How this supports student learning:
The recognition of the relationship of all other single-digit numbers to 5, at first, and then to 5 and to 10 helps students to structure their understanding of number around anchors of 5 and 10.  Students benefit from many experiences with making 10 and relating 10 to other numbers before they can develop strategies for the basic facts.  It is important for students to recognize 10 as an anchor number and to be able to identify relationships between it and the numbers 0 to 10.  Using visual models, such as ten frames when introducing basic facts will help students to see that numbers live inside a number.  Knowing how numbers relate to each other will be helpful for students when they learn strategies for composing and decomposing numbers.  Once these facts become automated, it becomes much easier for students to work with larger numbers and apply a variety of other strategies such as Using up/down over 10 and Taking from 10.

Steal the Bundle

Math Strategy: Using the 10 Anchor

Math Strand: Number Sense



Overview:

Steal the Bundle is a card game that provides helps to strengthen students’ understanding of the anchor of ten (also known as the Making Ten strategy). Players look to pair one card from their hand with either a card from a shared pile or a card from another player's discard pile (referred to as “the bundle”). The value of the two cards combined must equal ten. The player with the most cards at the end of the game wins.


How 'Steal the Bundle' activity supports student?

Steal the Bundle provides students with lots of opportunities to practice making ten, with a variety of numbers. Over time, this will help them quickly recall the combinations required to make ten, strengthening their understanding of known facts.

This game also helps students in developing their understanding of part whole relationships, as they begin to recognize that as the value of one card (or part) increases, the value of the other card (part) they need to make ten (the whole) decreases.
