Math Activity: Snappy Doubles (Using Near Doubles)

Snappy Doubles

Math Strategy: Using Near Doubles
Math Strand: Number Sense and Numeration

Overview:
Materials
• number cards 1 to 6 (BLM12), 1 set per player
• 6-sided number cube (or a spinner on BLM4)

Have students work with a partner or in groups of four. Each player holds the

6 number cards face up in front of him or her. Player 1 rolls the number cubes or spins the spinner. The other players look at their row of number cards to find the card that is the double of the number rolled or spun.

For example, if the number 5 is rolled, players would be looking for the 5 card. The first player to snap his or her card on the table and state the double fact and sum correctly gets a point. First player to 10 wins.

How “Snappy Doubles” supports student learning:
Knowing doubles facts is important as it builds operational competency. Adding doubles feels somehow easier than learning the other addition facts. With enough support and time spent on doubles for these addition facts become automatic, without the need to count.

Where to next?
As a next step have students find near doubles cards and for example, if the dice rolled is a 4, the players would look for a 5 to snap down. And state the fact 4+5=4+4+1

Another extension would be to use cards up to 10 and use a 10 sided dice.

Other sources for mastering doubles and near doubles can be found in “what to look for” by Alex Lawson using rekenreks and ten frames.
